Are you game?

On 1st August 2013, Lonely Planet India proudly launched Escape Express, a month-long social media campaign in which we invited contestants to embark on a virtual journey to some fantastic destinations. The Escape Express took you through destinations around three main junctions – Delhi, Mumbai and Bengaluru. Contestants were first asked to answer questions based on the Short Escape Destinations around these three cities followed by sharing their Escape Diary about their most memorable holiday. Not only was the contest a whole lot of fun, we also had some brilliant prizes; the 1st prize winner got to choose between an iPad with Retina display and a Nikon D5200 DSLR camera. Other prizes included an iPad mini, gift vouchers worth Rs.2500 and cool Lonely Planet sling bags. With more than three thousand entries and hundreds of Escape Diaries, the campaign was a huge hit and we have made a small video we’d like to share with you.

Tell us what our new contest should be and walk away with a cool Lonely Planet sling bag. Pen down your ideas below.

umm…maybe a virtual frequent flier contest, where in each day, you can choose to take a flight to a new destination (from a list of options) and earn points by identifying photos of key sights and spots at the destination. As you earn and accumulate points each day, you rise up the silver/ gold/ platinum club ladder and get to earn more and more points for each destination travelled to….also, you can share your personal experiences and traveller tips for each destination (with prizes for best tips). You get to share/ tweet about your daily travels, milestones (silver/ gold/ platinum club membership) and traveller tips. This can be run over a period of time with prizes for travellers with highest points.

Since you’re giving away free gifts, why not make the best of it?

To make your page look even more popular, you can organize a “Like & Comment to Win” contest.

Basically, fans can both like & comment on the post to double their chances of winning.

    Caption Contest

I’m a huge fan of caption contests!

Since I’m not as creative as I’d like to be, I love seeing how other people get creative with their captions. Caption contests are popular & tend to bring out the fun & creative side of people.

    Photo Contest

Photo contest are also a big hit — and super fun to participate in.

There are two ways to organize a photo contest:

Ask fans to submit a photo to you directly via Facebook message & you pick the winner based on your theme
Ask fans to post a photo on your page wall & either (a) you pick the winner or (b) winners are picked by most likes from the community.

    Dear Lonely Planet,

The idea of the contest is to have a photography contest for photographs from each of the states of india, for a week or month. prizes for best pics from states who naturaly qualify for finals of all the best pics from the states. Top pics from states win prizes and their pics are showcased in a lonely planet calender. Regards, louis

    • Kuldip Gadhvi

I liked the idea of Louis Thomas Olakkengal.
Best pic competition from each state is good idea.

Find new places to shoot from in the same old destinations.
Spot and tag new hangouts and an all together new persective of viewing.
More like watching pushkar lake not atop the chamunda temple on the nearby mountain top.
Something on the lines of “Spot the hidden treasure!”

How about a map hunt using google india maps. Put a flag up on a point of significance in India and give clues about the historical, cultural or geographical significance of that location. The first person to find the flag wins. Hint- make the clues difficult and not easy, so that sometimes it requires multiple clues.

  • Mritunjay

The idea is to have a collaborative photography contest across geographies. People can participate single-handedly or in teams of 2-3 members and work on a photostory which is collectively created by the team members based on multiple themes. To make it more interesting, put restrictions on various parameters like type of camera or settings or time etc.

    Heritage walk photo-essay Contest

The contest would ask people to take a heritage walk in their city and put in details with directions and major landmarks. The walk would talk about architectural styles and how they have evolved over the years, community market spaces and eating joints which have been there for many years. This could give a chance to people to walk around the places they normally don’t, and discover secrets in their city.

A treasure hunt contest will be a lot of fun… Imagine a contest where there are virtual significant locations…. Facts about the location will lead us to the clue of the next location. That would be fun!

  • bhavani

make it a little tougher and make it for the serious explorer.

so how about the contest is to: create a walking tour in your city / any city of your choice with at least 3 points of interest on that route… these can be about heritage / food / art / interesting roads!

why does it work for the visitor to your website: they get lovely walking tours around their city. things to discover on their next trip.

for those who love to explore and discover: a chance to show off their knowledge about the city

for you lp: many walking tours around the city that are personal and showcase your readers likes!

and what better way to discover a city than by walking around?

  • Vamshi Bandi

Put up an image of a not-so-tourist-famous hangout place from travel destinations across the country, and ask people to upload pictures of themselves in that place. It will show how many people actually travel and how many go just sightseeing. Also, it helps promote well deserving but obscure places that could use the publicity. :)

  • Somya singh
