Romance is a highly personal concept, and no single travel destination will fit everyone’s tastes. For some it’s a luxurious hotel suite with a whirlpool tub; for others it’s sleeping under the stars with the sound of crickets in the distance.
So, this Valentine’s Day we asked our Twitter followers to tell us where would they #love2travel2 with their partner. As expected, some of the responses were pretty interesting and here’s a little about the places mentioned in our favourite tweets.
One of the world’s greatest cultural cities, it is unique for its piazzas, palaces and waterways and for the picturesque islands that surround it like a string of pearls. Venice is a tiny city and you will barely take half an hour to walk past all the main sights, concentrated around Piazza San Marco and the Ponte di Rialto. That, of course, doesn’t account for the many hours you may be compelled to spend taking gondola rides down the Grand Canal and downing Prosecco (bubbly white wine).
Spiti, one half of two sub-districts clubbed together as Lahaul-Spiti, is the furthermost district in Himachal Pradesh on the Indo-China border. Separated from the fertile Lahaul Valley by the soaring 4551m Kunzum La, Spiti is like another chunk of Tibet marooned in India. This is a place where stunning swathes of brown, barren stretches kiss the vast skies, interrupted by soaring mountains and an incredibly blue river.
Experience endless miles of aquamarine coastline, sun-bleached ancient ruins, strong feta and stronger ouzo. The Greek landscape thrills, and Greek people are passionate about politics, coffee, art and gossiping. Let the Greece you’ve been imagining fill your senses, whether it’s through the pulsing nightclubs of Mykonos or the solemnity of Meteora; the grandeur of Delphi or the earthiness of Metsovo; the rugged Cretan hillsides and the lush wildflowers of spring.
With amazing seafood, sunshine, clear stretches of gorgeous beaches and greenery, Goa is a haven for visitors. Whatever you choose to do on your vacation – whether it’s extreme water sports or lazy days by the sea – this beach destination is sure to cast a spell on you. And it will entice you to return again and again, offering something new on every visit.
No place on earth compares to this vast white wilderness distilled to an elemental haiku: snow, ice, water, rock. Antarctica is simply stunning. The enormity of its ice shelves and mountain ranges invariably heightens feelings of humanity’s insignificance and nature’s grandeur. Antarctica’s peculiar beauty may haunt you for the rest of your days. Even the trip over, crossing the Southern Ocean is an experience – with no landmass, low-pressure systems circle clockwise unimpeded, eventually reaching incredible speeds. The Falkland Islands in the South Atlantic are often included in a trip to Antarctica.
