WORDS: PRIMROSE MONTEIRO-D’SOUZA
There’s something about discovering a new place that makes life a little more worth living, that makes you believe in the universality of all people, that gives you hope on bad days.
Just the idea of a new destination could help you get through that next presentation, that boring college course, that slew of chapattis you have to roll out. There’s that promise of a different world out there, waiting to be found, in a way that speaks directly to your heart. For me, a big vacay is the highlight of the year, promising weeks or even months of pleasurable planning and plotting; an impromptu break is a welcome pick-me-up, made more delicious by its spontaneity. And it goes without saying that Team LPMI is generous in its excitement about travel: anyone with a holiday coming up is bombarded with helpful tips and good advice. We all love a good break, even if we must travel it vicariously.
Happily, it turns out, you, our readers, love travel too. We had our panel of travel experts put together the nominations for our 23 awards this year, but it was you guys out there who chose our winners. We’re thrilled to bring you a sneak peek into who your votes commended in the different categories, complete with easy ways to max out your next trip to that destination. Our theme for this year’s awards function is world transport – in case you didn’t get that from our striking cover. And since, sadly, we can’t have all of you at the Lonely Planet Magazine India Travel Awards 2017, enjoy Art Director Mahesh’s little translation of that theme onto our pages. Write in and tell us what you think!
There’s more, of course, in this issue: author Tahir Shah’s evocative ode to hidden Casablanca, 15 fun things to do in Australia, and the atmospheric England and Scotland of King Arthur. So, between our many award-winning destinations and our offbeat ones, we know you’ll enjoy this issue as much as we’ve enjoyed putting it together.
Let’s celebrate the wondrousness of travel.
