Top 10 brewpubs and microbreweries you must try in Bengaluru

There is something frothy and spirited brewing in Bengaluru and we are not talking about filter coffee. Bengaluru’s tryst with pubs is legendary and the brewpubs are perhaps a case of new wine in old bottles, except that this is about craft beer and not wine. In less than a decade, over 60 brewpubs with microbreweries have mushroomed in the city and we even have an exclusive brewery – Geist which brews only craft beer. If you are looking for the bitter IPA (Indian Pale Ale) or the lighter wheat German Hefeweizen or a more locally favourite flavoured with mango or jackfruit, ragi or koku, then here are some of the best brewpubs in the city where you can get high!

1. Byg Brewsky Brewing Company

Beer just became larger than life at Byg Brewsky Brewing Company – Hennur, housed in a mammoth 65,000 sq. ft. of space, while the open kitchen itself is over 5000 sq. ft. “It is about creating a jaw dropping experience, “says Pravesh Pandey, partner and owner. They also have a branch at Sarjapur Road.

Specials- Byg Houblon, the hoppy Cyro Citra Wit, the smoky Rauchbier, the Byg Kokum and the Byg Trippel; over 200 recipes are served here and an exclusive menu from Karnataka. Recommend the millet falafal and ragi papadi chaat

2. Windmills Craftworks

“We are all about true to style genuine craft beers” says Ajay Nagarajan, CEO of Windmills Craftworks, one of the earliest to set up their microbrewery in Whitefield. Music, books, jazz concerts and great food are synonymous with Windmills. They also have an exclusive restaurant for traditional Kannada cuisine called Oota.

Must-try- The South German Hefeweizen, a classic wheat beer with a strong clove and banana flavour, the Golden Ale, Mango Wheat Beer, made with juicy Alphonso mangoes and the Bavarian Rauchbier

3. The Biere Club

The oldest and the first microbrewery in the city, The Biere Club is located in the heart of the city with a branch now in Whitefield and has the ambience of an old fashioned English pub.

Specials- The Belgian strong ale along with seasonal specials flavoured with fruits, spices, herbs, strawberry, lychee, chocolate, vanilla, ragi or chilli. On the tap now is a mango special.

4. TOIT Brewpub

One of the pioneers of craft beers in Bengaluru, TOIT is known for its soulful pub grub with delicious wood fired pizzas and baked nachos. TOIT also organises brewery tours on request.

Specials –TOIT Weiss, Tintin TOIT along with specials like Aam Aadmi Ale, infused with mango, a Jackfruit IPA called Jack the IPA, Mosambi Wheat, Pumpkin Ale among others.

5. Arbor Brewing Company

A classic American styled brewpub, Arbor is in collaboration with a Michigan brewpub and microbrewery. “If you are looking for bold, full flavoured, true to style beers with gourmet pub food in a chilled out, informal atmosphere, then look no further, “says Gaurav Sikka, Managing Director.

Specials- The Raging Elephant, an old school American IPA, Bengaluru Bliss, a wheat Hefeweizen with banana and clove flavours and Smooth Criminal with honey and lavender flowers . The seasonal tipple – Mango Maibock with Malgova

6. Red Rhino Craft Brewery

It is the vibrant terrace that draws you to Red Rhino besides its beers, wines and delicious food. Located in Whitefield, it’s a retro bar and a microbrewery, set amidst 20,000 sq. ft.. of space.

Specials- American lager, Hefeweizen wheat beer and a West Coast IPA besides seasonal specials like Mango Lager with local Raspuri mangoes and a New England IPA.

7. The Druid Garden

“The design is inspired by the German beer gardens. During the day, you are in a beautiful beer garden and in the night, it is a vibrant restaurant“, says Niharika Rawal, co-founder. Located in Sahakarnagar, the menu has over 120 recipes from around the world.

8. Biergarten Brewery and Kitchen

Inspired by the European bars and beer gardens, Biergarten with its two branches in Bengaluru is a casual retro brewpub with an informal atmosphere.

Specials- There is an English style IPA, the popular Hefeweizen and the seasonal Orange Pale Ale besides Polish ale.

9. Aurum Brew Works

Aurum is set amidst 23,000 sq. ft. of space in Sarjapur and is known for its special menu from Karnataka which is a blend of street and gourmet cuisine. Do not miss the “boozy” ice creams that are stout, vodka and rum based.

Specials – Belgian Witbier, light Hefeweizen, malty Amber Lager to the traditional stouts and IPAs. Seasonal beers- citrusy Citra Pale Ale and Apple Cider

10. Geist

The last on our list is not a brewpub but a microbrewery that makes its own craft beer and supplies it to over 70 restaurants and bars in the city. They have also collaborated with Windmills Craftworks and have an outlet at the airport where you have six beers on taps – three from Geist and three from Windmills, all produced in the Geist microbrewery. Brewery tours are available on request.

Specials – Geist started with three wheat beers – Geist Witty Wit, Geist Weise Guy, Geist Uncle Dunkle. At the airport you can also try the Geist Golden Ale, Geist Marzen.
