Getaways from Mumbai: No More Boring Weekends

Make the most of long weekends this year and head out of Mumbai

Probably the best part of living is Mumbai is how close it is to India’s wine country, Nashik. And, while the ultimate dream is to sip wine in the Tuscan countryside, the vineyards around Nashik are no less spectacular. Sula has a villa and that rooms offer stunning views of its vineyards and Gangapur Lake. Grab bicycles and explore the winding paths around the property or lounge about with a book. The tour of its winery takes you back to Sula’s early years, and includes the making of its most popular wines, along with a five-step guide to tasting wine. While not as fancy as Sula, Vallonné Vineyards has a simple charm that goes well with the flamboyance of vino. Located next to Mukhne Lake and overlooking the Kavnai Peak, Vallonné’s four rooms have been designed with vintage furniture and handcrafted upholstery. A little further into the area, wine connoisseurs Grover Zampa are ready to share everything they’ve learnt about wine over the years. While Grover Zampa doesn’t provide accommodation, its winery tour is extremely popular. Learn how its wines are processed, fermented, filtered, stored, aged, bottled, labelled and packaged, and taste between five to seven varieties of wine. Visitors to York Winery can expect a vineyard spread over six acres with a hill on one side and a lake on the other. The views, expectedly, are beautiful. Enjoy its daily winery tours, and end it with a wine-tasting session along with some cheese and light snacks on the balcony overlooking the lake. Since neither Grover Zampa nor York offer accommodation, stay at The Gateway Hotel Ambad Nashik or Ibis Nashik. Meanwhile, the Soma Vineyard Resort is a 29-room resort with an amphitheatre, spa and gym, which provides plenty of adventure activities. Overlooking the backwaters of Gangapur Dam, the resort is great for a couple of days away from the city. Take a break from lazing around to enjoy Soma’s wine tour. The sommeliers take you through the processes of making whites, reds and rosé as well as sparkling wines, followed by a wine-tasting session.
