If you’re looking for a holiday that requires you to do almost nothing but indulge yourself, there’s hardly anything better than drifting lazily past Mediterranean ports on sunny blue seas. We tried it on Costa Cruises’ Costa Fascinosa out of Barcelona, and we could hardly get ourselves to leave our floating hotel-city in Savona in Italy at the end of our three-night break from reality. Sure, we did go ashore in Marseille, a historic maritime port and one of France’s most underrated cities, but the rest of the time was pretty much spent doing very little.
Once you’ve found your way around the massive cruise liner, it’s up to you to decide what to do with the luxury of your time. You could spend an hour or two at the immensely fun 4D cinema or the Grand Prix Simulator, kick back at the library or in the pools or in the huge spa – there’s even a Turkish bath! When hunger strikes, there are five restaurants to choose from, or just give in to crêpes and ice cream at the Coffee and Chocolate Bar. There’s even the Cognac and Cigar Bar if you want to get even more high-spirited. All this to the backdrop of the gorgeous ocean outside, always asparkle in a way that only the sea in this region can be.
Get yourself to Barcelona a few days before your sail date; Gaudi’s city will reward you with great architecture and food. And, of course, factor in some time in Milan before you fly out; even an afternoon at the Duomo will fill your heart.
