Postcards from our August 2015 issue

NICE, FRANCE – X marks the spot: People seldom look up while walking. I captured this photograph while wandering through the back alleys of Nice. Incidentally, while standing at the intersection of two narrow streets, I happened to peer skywards and noticed the ‘X’ formed by the buildings. The image was only made more beautiful by the old buildings, so full of character.

ANDAMAN ISLANDS, BAY OF BENGAL – Bolt from the blue: I saw these boats while flying over the Andaman Islands in a helicopter. Anchored in the middle of the rippling turquoise waters, the boats appeared deserted; the fishermen had probably returned home with the day's catch. Thanks to its thriving marine life, as well as years of isolation and the almost complete absence of commercial fishing, the waters around the Andaman Islands are abundant in a variety of quality fish.

FUJI KAWAGUCHIKO, JAPAN – Hide & seek: We stayed in a ryokan facing Mount Fuji for two days, but did not get a glimpse of the mountain because it was cloudy all throughout. Disappointed, we decided to check out early and continue on the rest of our trip through Japan. However, while getting ready, I looked outside and saw the clouds drift away, and quickly took this picture. The Japanese say – Fuji san shows himself only to the lucky – and this sight truly made me feel blessed.
